Advice for students

The Brand Hub provides advice and tools to help University of Melbourne students engage with the broader community under the banner of the University of Melbourne.

These tools will ensure students are represented appropriately and in alignment with the University’s strategies and as members of the University community. Use of the University of Melbourne logo by students is limited. Generally, the logo should only be used by students representing the University in an official capacity to external audiences.

The University of Melbourne name, crest and logo all provide support to the “University brand”.

We’ve built the University’s reputation over many years, and our logo (trade mark) is what distinguishes us from other universities.

Anyone who wants to use the University logo (this includes students, alumni, service providers, clients, partners etc) must ask for permission via the Brand Management team.

What is the formal trade mark?

Our logo (trade mark) is made up of various elements that enable us to describe and use it correctly.

All these elements combined with the University of Melbourne blue colour (Traditional Heritage Blue) make up the University of Melbourne 'marks' (also called logo or trade mark).

These 'marks' should never be adapted, adjusted, separated or edited in any way. Altering our logo compromises the integrity of our brand.

Academic Competitions

Students representing the University and/or their course-work or research in a competition, must request their relevant faculty endorses their activity prior to asking permission to use the University logo.

Students should:

  • Ask their supervisor to contact the Brand Management team requesting the use of the UoM logo for their proposed activity.
  • Wait to hear back from the Brand Management team.
  • If the request is approved, the Brand Management team will provide a license for the student to use the UoM logo for their activities and can work with the student on how to use the logo appropriately. This license will have an end date and the student must cease using the University logo on this date.

Merchandise

Students may purchase branded merchandise via the University’s online shop. Customisable hoodies are available from the Merchandise team. If students want to create bespoke merchandise specific to their study area or activity, they should check in first with their faculty and also the Brand Management team.

Students should:

  • Ensure the activity is endorsed or supported by their supervisor or faculty.
  • Never sell any merchandise for-profit that features the University of Melbourne logo.
  • Have a licence to use the logo from the Brand Management team if they want to use the logo for any purpose.

Poster templates

Students should:

  • Use the poster templates available for PhD students when presenting their work.
  • Never adapt or use the University logo in any way other than for the purpose provided in the templates.
  • Know that altering our logo compromises the integrity of our brand and should never be done.

Business cards

PhD students can order business cards, if required, when they are presenting University of Melbourne research at a conference.

Students should:

  • Gain approval for a business card from their supervisor.
  • Submit their request directly to the Design team via the Staff Hub.
  • Ensure their business card has an expiry/end date and make sure it is not used beyond this date.

University of Melbourne alumni should contact their Alumni Group/Association or their faculty Alumni contact to find out how best to represent themselves under the banner of the University of Melbourne where necessary.

Joining a club or society is one of the most fulfilling ways to connect with like-minded people, develop career goals and increase networking opportunities while studying.

Starting a club or society

Looking at starting a new club or society?

Students should:

  • Contact the University of Melbourne Student Union (UMSU) or the Graduate Student Association (GSA).
  • Contact their relevant faculty.
  • Ensure their club is formally/officially affiliated with their faculty, UMSU or the GSA.
  • Review UMSU and GSA guidelines to know how to brand their club alongside UMSU and GSA to clearly articulate that the club is formally affiliated and endorsed.

UMSU, the GSA and the relevant faculty will be able to advise on formally affiliating a club. They may advise students to join a club if something similar already exists. They can also help align an academically-focused club with a discipline, course or any relevant faculty strategies and goals.

NOTE

  • Students do not need to register a club name unless it is an incorporated business.
  • Use of the University of Melbourne logo and name (trade mark) by clubs and societies is by special request only.
  • Students should never register a club name under the University of Melbourne name without seeking guidance from the Brand Management team.

If students want to publicise and promote their club’s activities they need to be aware of copyright, IP and trade mark law.

Using a name, logo or unique identity that has been copied, or edited in any way, puts the student and their affiliated club/organisation at risk of trade mark or copyright infringement.

Before designing a logo or finding a name for students must:

  • Do their due diligence when it comes to developing a logo and naming their club. It is the student's responsibility as a University of Melbourne community not to put themselves, UMSU, the GSA, their faculty or the University in a situation where we (or they) could be held liable for breaching copyright and trade mark law.
  • Check in with their affiliated organisation (UMSU, GSA, faculty, the University's Brand Management team) and review and comply with any brand policies and regulations.
  • Ensure they are not breaching any copyright or trade mark laws with the name chosen, or the design of a logo.
  • Never use any copyrighted or trade-marked names within a group’s name without written permission from the copyright owner.
  • Never copy or rip off any existing logo or trade mark or any part of any existing logo – a student could be liable under copyright and trade mark law.

NOTE

  • Students do not need to register a club name unless it is an incorporated business.
  • Use of the University of Melbourne logo and name (trade mark) by clubs and societies is by special request only.
  • Students should never register a club name under the University of Melbourne name without seeking guidance from the Brand Management team.
